What is Biomass?

Biomass: Organic matter available on a renewable basis. Biomass includes forest and mill residues, agricultural crops and wastes, wood and wood wastes, animal wastes, livestock operation residues, aquatic plants, fast-growing trees and plants, and municipal and industrial wastes.

The Benefits of Biomass

Biomass is a renewable source of energy and replaces the need for fossil fuels which helps to counter the impacts of climate change. Although biomass generates the same amount of carbon dioxide when burned as fossil fuels, the process of growing the biomass (plants etc) removes a similar amount of CO2 from the atmosphere, it is therefore classed as a zero emission source of energy as long as more biomass is planted to sustain the levels used.
